CTDOT Requests Your Input
CTDOT invites you to report bike crashes and road hazards: Link to ConnDOT webpage. This web page also has an online map which indicates bicycle suitability of all state roads.
CRCOG Bike/Ped Data Collection Project
Why count bicyclists and pedestrians? Just like motor vehicle counts, counting bicyclists and pedestrians will help us to understand user demand for bike/ped facilities and measure the benefits of these investments. This information will also help us target projects and improve our transportation system.
CRCOG is a participant in the National Bike/Ped Documentation Projectsponsored by the Institute of Transportation Engineers and Alta Planning and Design. Our first count took place in September 2009 and we plan to count at least annually going forward. Our efforts will be consistent with the National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project, but we will fine-tune our methods to provide the most useful data to our region.
2009 Bike/Ped Count
In our first year of counting, we collected data at 25 locations throughout the region. The results are documented in our 2009 Bike Ped Data collection report. You can download the report at the link below.
2010 Bike/Ped Count
In 2010, we are unable to provide the level of count support that we provided in 2009, but you can still count and report your results to us. Count forms and instructions are available at the links below.
2010 count dates: the official national count days are September 14 to 16 and either the Saturday before or after. The Saturday prior is the date of the Discover Hartford Walking and Biking Tour so it will not represent an average day in Hartford, West Hartford, or Farmington. Therefore, we recommend that you count on the following Saturday, September 18th, in those communities. Pick one of the suggested weekdays for your count.
2010 Count Times: The National Documentation Project recommends that counts take place between 5 and 7 PM on weekdays and between noon and 2 PM on Saturday. We shifted our weekday count times in 2009 to 4 to 6 PM to capture more of our traditional peak traffic period. Numerous counters suggested that we begin the counts earlier to capture schoolchildren. Counters are encouraged to expand the count time, if they are able. Also, if you would like to collect the AM peak period along with the PM, more counts are always welcome.
OK, I want to help count this year, now what do I do?
- Line up others to help out – maybe you belong to a club that would like to help with this project.
- Decide where you will count:
- If you counted last year, please count the same location, so we can track changes over time.
- Check with your town to learn if there are particular locations that they would like to have counted.
- If you are concerned about a particular location in your neighborhood, or near a school, select that.
- Contact Sandy Fry (sfry@crcog.org 860-522-2217 x220) if you would like some guidance on how to select a location
- Let us know where you will count by emailing sfry@crcog.org .
- Download the appropriate form and instructions – we have forms for 4 legged intersections, t-intersections, trails, and midblock locations.
- Take a look at our instructional powerpoint. Contact Sandy Fry with any questions.
- COUNT!
- Count on either September 14, 15 or 16 for a weekday count. Count at least between 4 and 6 PM, feel free to add hours if you can.
- Count on September 11 (do not choose this date for Hartford, West Hartford or Farmington counts) or 18 from noon to 2 PM, feel free to add more hours if you can.
- Report back: Send your forms to CRCOG: Sandy Fry, CRCOG, 241 Main Street, Hartford, CT 06106

Powerpoint demonstration for standard intersection count: the following is a link to a presentation that will illustrate how you record different pedestrian and bicycle movements. Click on the link, if the slide show does not start right away, click on View/View Slideshow. The presentation shows a pedestrian or bike movement and then shows where to record the movement on the form.
