TRANSPORTATION CLEARINGHOUSE

As we come across creative transportation solutions to safety or design suggestions other communities and States have considered we’ll post information to this webpage.  If you have any tools or resources that have been helpful to your community, as it relates to transportation, please feel free to share it with us by contacting Jennifer Carrier at jcarrier@crcog.org

Road Safety Audits

Road Safety Audits (RSAs) are a proactive approach to improving transportation safety.  To kick-off the effort, an independent, disciplinary team is established to conduct field reviews and identify issues.  Officials representing engineering, public works and law enforcement are just a few of the key team members that should be encouraged to participate in an RSA.  Officials examine operations and safety from their particular area of expertise and report on existing and future roadways finding and potential solutions to improve safety.

Follow the links below to obtain more information on RSAs.

Double Crossover Diamond Interchanges

The first Double Crossover Diamond Interchange (DCD)

in the nation, also referred to as Diverging Diamond

Interchange, was opened to Missouri traffic in June 2009.  The interchange improves traffic flow by eliminating problematic left turns – the catch is that is briefly sends all cars over to the left side of the roadway.

Additional information is also available in these two videos:

Cul-De-Sac Design

The Town of East Lyme has had success in designing cul-de-sacs that are a bit easier to maintain, particularly during winter weather.

Feel free to contact Charles Holyfield, Town of East Lyme, if you have any questions or want additional information.

Retroreflectivity

Based on criteria in the 2003 Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), three federally mandated compliance deadlines regarding sign retroreflectivity were scheduled to become effective in January 2012, January 2015, and January 2018.  In a recent press release, the Obama administration proposed the elimination of these upcoming sign retroreflectivity compliance deadlines.  The FHWA has initiated a 60-day public comment period for this proposed rule beginning August 30, 2011.  The links below provide additional information on the 2003 MUTCD retroreflectivity requirements, the proposed elimination of compliance deadlines, and how to comment on the proposed elimination of the compliance deadlines.
